Plain Language Big Book
by Judy F.
As I’m sure most of you are aware, this April, Area Delegates from around the country and Canada will be attending the General Service Conference and voting whether to proceed with the PLAIN Language Big Book. First let me assure you, this book is not to replace the original BB but to be a separate book available for purchase through A.A. General Service.
Discussion of the possible need for a plain language big book came about in 2016 when inquiries were made to NY. From these inquiries a sub-committee was set up to begin looking at the existing BB, the literacy level, reading level and relatability of newcomers to the original text. Fast forward to 2024, proposed items for the 2024 General Service Conference include moving forward with the writing of a Plain Language BB. The proposed items also include those who wish to halt the process.
Those of you who know me can imagine what my initial reaction has been to all of this. Some of my old timers are probably rolling over in their graves at the mere suggestion. I was adamant, no, no, and again no. If I was able to get through the original text with my sponsor so should everyone else. Then I stumbled upon an article by Bill W. entitled “The Shape of Things to Come”. It opened my eyes to how closed minded I can be to change, especially when it comes to the program. Bill said “and above all let us remember that great legion who still suffer from alcoholism and who are still without hope. Let us, at any cost or sacrifice, so improve our communication with all these that they may find what we have found – a new life of freedom under God.”
