Dear Recovering Corker,

Dear Corker,

How do people typically feel at their very first meeting of AA? What can I expect?

Thank you.

Dear Anonymous,

At the first meeting there may be mixed emotions. Nervousness.  Anxiety about not knowing anyone, or what will happen at the meeting. Relief - just by walking into the room, sitting down and listening.

Most meetings are warm and welcoming.  People may introduce themselves by first name only.

Some may offer their phone number or say “keep coming back.”  It can feel comforting to be around people who understand without needing a long explanation. You may hear someone share a story that sounds familiar and you may think - “oh yeah that happened to me too.”

For some, there’s a sense of relief knowing they are not alone.
