Dear Recovering Corker,

I have not had a “bright light” or “burning bush” experience since completing the twelve steps. Does this mean I haven’t experienced the spiritual awakening as it is mentioned in step twelve?

Spiritually Fit

Dear Spiritually Fit,

By no means does an AA member have to see bright lights or burning bushes to have a spiritual awakening. Bill calls a spiritual awakening a “transforming experience”. If we have taken the steps as outlined in the Big Book, been honest and thorough then a transformation has taken place. We have made the list of those we had harmed; recognized the character defects that stood in the way; gone to those people we harmed and made our amends; we continue to look at ourselves; ask in our morning meditation what we can do each day for the man who still suffers. Continue to do these things and your “transforming experience” will continue.
